June Labor Report

The Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) reports the labor market posted a noteworthy increase in jobs over the month. Non-seasonally adjusted private sector jobs increased by 10,000 in the last month in Kansas. Approximately half of the gain in jobs over the month was due to seasonal factors. Non-seasonally adjusted job gains for June came from nine of the 11 major industries. Leisure and hospitality gained 3,000 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities gained 2,900 jobs; and manufacturing grew by 1,500 jobs where gains were in both durable and non-durable goods.

Two major industries, government and other services, reported over-the-month job losses.

"The estimate of average weekly hours worked increased in June to 35.1 hours. This is a rebound from the previous five months which only averaged 34.4," said Tyler Tenbrink, Senior Labor Economist. "Part of the change over the month was seasonal and not unusual for June, however, this is an early sign that may lead to job growth if it continues on this trend."

The non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged from last month at 5.8 percent and down from 6 percent one year ago. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.8 percent, up from 5.7 percent in May 2013 and the same as in June 2012.

"Initial unemployment claims were down 2,064 from May and down 2,333 from last year, " said Lana Gordon, Secretary of Labor. "Fewer people coming into the unemployment system means more Kansans finding work and staying employed."

Mitchell County: Civilian Labor Force of 3726
Employment: 3604
Unemployment: 122
Unemployment Rate for June 2013 3.3%

In May, 2013 Mitchell County had an unemployment rate of 3.6% and compared to June, 2012 of 3.1%.

Adopt a Classroom

The Beloit Business Committee (BBC) would like to begin a program in August that allows Beloit area businesses to "adopt" an elementary classroom at BES or St. Johns. The BBC will work with the area businesses to match a business with a classroom. The teachers are making their "needs list" of 10-12 items that can purchased locally and will be turning them in August 1st. With budget cuts, the hope is to help each teacher and classroom fill a void. Now we need your help to "adopt" an elementary classroom to fill the lists. For more information you can contact the Chamber at 738-2717 or Janet Remus, Super 8, at 738-8592.

A look at early day Mitchell County through the eyes of an amateur woman photographer, who used a glass plate camera.
Saturday, August 10th At 5pm in the Quonset building.

Also taking place will be Farm Family in Kansas, Traveling Resource Trunk.
You will be able to examine life on a Kansas farm in the late 1800s with this trunk.  Activities in the trunk explore farm work, the impact of the environment on farming in Kansas, and the entertainment and recreation enjoyed by Kansas farm families.  Numerous tools and photographs help students learn about this important part of Kansas history as they are introduced to life before electricity, automobiles, and the widespread use of commercially processed food.
You can explore the role of men, women and children on the farm through the use of primary sources and hands-on exploration.  Letters, journal entries and photographs introduce you to real Kansas settlers.  Objects in the trunk provide an opportunity to peel an apple, pit a cherry, grind coffee, and more.  Power point presentations show how to churn butter and husk corn.
This will take place each night from 5pm-9pm in the Quonset building.
