NCK Tech Students Compete in Welding Contest
Students from North Central Kansas Technical College (NCK Tech), Beloit and Hays campuses, participated in a Shielded Metal Arch Welding (SMAW) contest on the Fort Hays State University campus on February 12, 2014. During the contest, students tested their technical knowledge with a SMAW written test and a Blueprint test and demonstrated their welding skills by producing a weldment from the provided blueprint with proper weld locations, sizes and contours.
NCK Tech students took top honors in the contest, securing four of the top five scores and placing 14 students in the top 20 scores. NCK Tech students, their hometowns and placement in the contest include:
# 1- Curtiss Anderson (Glen Elder); # 3- Joel Hayes (Douglass); #4- Joe Pfeifer (Hays); #5- Tom Duke (Milford); # 6- Isaac Dreiling (Victoria); # 8- Jacob Arnold (Bennington); # 9- Zeph Larney (Gas); # 11- Kole Blazek(Concordia); # 12-Austin Chavez( Baldwin); # 15- Kyle Bogart(Concordia); #16 - Trent Richardson(Hastings, NE ); #17 - Wade Buck (Grinnell, KS ); #19 - Logan Mayden (Abilene, KS); #20 - Kyle Rice (Horton, KS).
In the NCK Tech Welding program classroom, students engage in welding safety, theory, mathematics, cost analysis/layout, blueprint reading, and pipe template development for the pipe trades. The welding laboratory exposes students to all phases used in the welding industry; including SMAW (Stick welding), Oxyfuel welding/cutting, Carbon Arc cutting/gouging, GMAW (MIG welding), FCAW (Flux Cored Arc welding) and GTAW (TIG welding). Students become proficient in AWS, ASME and API welding codes and standards. Upon completion of the one year program, students earn a certificate and can become a certified welder in a variety of welding disciplines by successfully passing certification tests. Further information on the program offerings at NCK Tech may be found at www.ncktc.edu.

Mitchell County Clerk's Office
The Mitchell County Clerk's Office will be hosting the North Central Kansas County Clerk's Association Spring Meeting in Beloit on March 20th. The office is requesting if some of our local businesses would donate a gift, gift certificate, or coupon for percentages off merchandise to give to these hard working Clerks as an example of our local cooperation and "can-do" attitude as a community. At many of their meetings they receive these incentives from local businesses and the Clerks spend time looking and shopping at these locations.
If you would like to donate any item for this special event in our community, The Clerk's Office would be more than willing to pick it up. They will make certain that if you donate a gift item that you will be given credit for your donation. Contact Chris Treaster, Mitchell County Clerk, for more information.
This is a great way to show off our community and support!

St. John's Catholic School to be on EWTN
The City of Beloit and St. John's Catholic High School will stand together on the world stage later this week as EWTN Global Catholic Television highlights the school.
EWTN reaches 140 different countries and territories and is available to 230 million viewers worldwide. It is the largest Catholic Television company in the world.
Cornerstone Foundation Director Andrew Niewald, who also teaches religion classes at St. John's, along with Joe Holdren, Assistant Principal at St. John's and St. John's senior class member Luke Eilert made the trip to EWTN headquarters in Irondale, Ala. in late January to tape the segment.
The show, "Life on the Rock" with Fr. Mark and Doug, will Friday, February 28th at 7pm, 12am and 10am, Sunday, March 2nd and at 8am, Tuesday, March 4th.
St. John's was picked for the show because Beloit is the smallest town in the nation to host a pre-K through 12th grade Catholic school that is supported by one parish.
St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is also a small parish with just 680 member families.
And while St. John's may be small, the student numbers have continued to climb with an enrollment of 150 students, up from 130 students five years ago.
You can watch their journey on www.youtube.com, St. John's travels to EWTN studio or on the St. John's Catholic School-Beloit, KS facebook page.
Congratulations St. John's! Another great reason to live in Beloit and Mitchell County!

NCK Tech Students Compete at State BPA
Students from the North Central Kansas Technical (NCK Tech) College - Information Technology (IT) and Business Management Departments recently competed in the State Leadership Conference for Business Professionals of America (BPA) held in Wichita on February 20-22, 2014. The departments brought home 14 first, 9 second, 4 third and 2 fourth place awards. The award winning students are now eligible to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, IN on April 30 - May 4, 2014.
Business Professionals of America helps prepare students for careers in business, computer, and office occupations. Technical Colleges, Community Colleges, and Vocational Schools participate in the post-secondary organization. During the Leadership Conference, competitive events are held in several areas, including financial, administrative, information technology, management, marketing, and human resources. The events require a student to solve business problems in an allotted amount of time and present their solutions to judges from their respective fields or sit for an exam which covers the area of interest.
The NCK Tech Business Management program is designed to prepare students for employment in a variety of management and entrepreneurial careers. The basics of marketing and management are studied both in the classroom and through an internship which includes employment within the field of study. Students earn a certificate upon completion of the one year program. The Information Technology Program provides training in network administration, web page design, PC Maintenance, intranet and Internet operations, desktop publishing using Adobe and Microsoft Applications, video production, and programming using Visual Basic and C# (XNA Game Console, Phone App Programming). Students have the option of an Information Technology Certificate or an Associate of Applied Science Degree after successfully completing the program of instruction. Dean Franzen is the Business Management instructor; Robert McCreight and Krystal Link are instructors in the Information Technology Department.
Competing students, their hometowns and their area of competition are listed in the table on the attachment.
