Mitchell County Commissioners

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly business meeting on Monday, December 8, 2014. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present for the meeting.

The Commissioners announced that Kelly Hawk has been appointed to the position of Director of the Emergency Medical Service. He will fill the vacancy created by the recent resignation of Ed Debesis. Eric Hamel, interim EMS director, was named as the Assistant Director of the EMS.

Larry Emerson, Public Works Superintendent, inquired of the Commissioners their thoughts regarding an increase in the Residential Trash Rate. Emerson reminded them that if an increase was to be made, the decision to do so would have to be made by the first of the year. The current charge for residential trash service is fifteen dollars and sixty cents per month. This includes an eight dollar county landfill charge, six dollars and twenty cents to Dunstan’s for trash pickup and one dollar and forty cents to the City of Beloit for the billing.

A spirited discussion regarding whether or not an increase in the residential trash pickup charge was needed then followed. Emerson reminded the Commissioners that there had been no increase in the fee for trash pickup in several years. He also pointed out that the track loader used at the landfill was twenty years old and was quickly approaching the end of its useful service. Emerson’s inquiries to vendors indicated that a new replacement loader would the in the two hundred fifty thousand dollar range. An increase in the residential trash fee would offset some of the expense of purchasing a new machine.

Commissioner Tom Claussen said, “With the City talking about raising the rates for electrical service I hate to add another added expense to utility expenses. I think we ought to hold the line on an increase for a year if we can and then see where we are at.”

Commissioner Mike Cooper said, “I agree with Tom. However we might consider raising the fee for using the Construction Demolition pit. It has been at thirty dollars per ton for quite a while. It is a fee paid by contractors.”

After a brief discussion Commissioners passed a motion to raise the fee for using the construction demolition pit from thirty dollars per ton to thirty-five dollars per ton.

The Commissioners appointed Linda Eberle to serve as the Glen Elder Township treasurer.

A Neighborhood Revitalization Grant application was approved for Bryan Stillwell for a forty foot by sixty foot pole barn in the amount of eighteen thousand nine hundred dollars. It will be located at Thirty-eight fifty-three C Road near Scottsville.

It was announced that Certificates of Appreciation for thirty-five years of service had been presented to Larry Emerson and Kathy File.

Having successfully dealt with all items on the agenda, the Commissioners adjourned their meeting.
