Jerome (Jerry) Stanley Baird, Age 83

Jerome Stanley Baird was born July 17, 1931 in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Robert K. and Anna H.(Arens) Baird. He passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2014.

Jerry graduated from Hunter High School in 1949. He attended Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, Missouri. Jerry served his country in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955. After his years in the service, Jerry returned to Kansas where he worked construction and did some farming.

Jerry moved to Downs where he lived in the former Lipton Hotel and later in Harvey Rogers apartments which were owned by Marti Wagner; and now owned by his good friend, Diana Brew. He worked from 1970 to May 2000 at Pork Packers International Inc. in Downs. During his years at PPI, Jerry would go to the Downs Café for breakfast and the cook would put together a sack lunch for him to take to work. Jerry loved to attend auctions and would often be seen with a car load of treasures. He enjoyed watching baseball and football, particularly the Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs.
He loved to socialize at the local "hang-outs." After retirement, Jerry spent time walking the business district of Downs and many afternoons he was seen sitting on the benches visiting with passersby.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Richard in 1990 and Eugene in 2003, and a sister, Margie Leathers in 2013.

Survivors include: sisters, Delores Henrikson of Bolivar, Missouri, Eulala Herl of Topeka, Kansas; brother-in-law, Frank Leathers of Topeka, numerous nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Chester Brohman.

Graveside services will be held Monday, December 29, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Hunter, Kansas. Visitation will be Sunday, December 28, 2014 from 7-8:30 at Domoney Funeral Home, Downs.
