Joyce Hartman, Age 85

Joyce Lorraine Hartman was born March 31, 1929, to Delbert and Jessie (McGee) Woodburn on a farm near Jewell, Kansas. She passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015, in Hutchinson, KS. Joyce attended the Star country school, the Mankato High School and then the Jewell High School where she graduated in 1946. She moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend fashion design school until returning to Beloit, Kansas to marry L. Edward Hartman on Feb. 1, 1948. Two children, Steven Lee and Holly Beth were born to this happy union. Joyce and Ed owned and operated Hartman Oil and Hartman Construction Company. In 1953, they founded the Corral Drive-In, (fondly remembered by many for the car hops and the homemade curly fries), which later became the Banner Restaurant. Joyce and Ed enjoyed the challenge of operating the restaurant and had fond memories of the great people that worked with them. They also started the EZ Stor Self Storage business before retiring in 1987 to spend winters in Mesa, Arizona and traveling in their motor home. The couple celebrated 52 years of marriage. Joyce lived year-round in Mesa, AZ after Ed died in March of 2000. She moved to Hutchinson, KS in 2011 to be near her family. Joyce had a passion for genealogy and through her research discovered that her family had relatives in Germany and Australia which led to many visits to the USA from cousins from both countries. She also spent many hours creating memory books for her grandchildren as well as books that recorded the lives of her husband, mother and father. She will be remembered by her family for her loving and generous heart. Joyce started another chapter in her life when she met Lee Harrison in 2001. They enjoyed golfing, dancing, going on cruises, and made two trips to Europe where they visited the newly discovered relatives. Joyce also spent a month visiting cousins in Australia with her good friend, Barbara Quakenbush. Family and friends were Joyce's passion and delight. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Qui Bene Club and the Beloit Country Club. She is survived by one son, Steve Hartman and wife Cheryl of Beloit, Holly Hawn and fiancé Bruce Taylor of Hutchinson and her grandchildren, Jena Hartman of Lawrence, KS and Patrick Hawn of Manhattan, KS. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Joan Morton of Salina, KS and her longtime friend, Lee Harrison of Seattle, WA.

Following her wishes, her body was donated to medical science. A memorial service will be at 1:30 PM Saturday, February 21 at the First Christian Church in Beloit. There will be no visitation. An annual scholarship is being established in appreciation of the many high school students that the Hartman family had the pleasure of working with through the years at their restaurant. Memorials may be given to the Ed & Joyce Hartman Scholarship Fund in care of the McDonald Funeral Home, 910 N. Campbell, Beloit, KS 67420
