Larry Suchsland, Age 69

On April 27, 2015 Larry Suchsland was called home by Jesus after his 10 month couragous fight with Brain Cancer. He died at home under Hospice care and surrounded by the love of his family. He was born in Bellville, KS on May 23, 1945 to Lester and Marjorie (Myers) Suchsland of Burr Oak, KS. He attended public school at Burr Oak where he participated in all sporting events, graduating with the class of 1963. He attended Ft. Hays and then graduated from Barber School in Wichita, KS.

He enlisted into the Navy on Dec. 29, 1965 where he served on the USS HOLDER until he was honorably discharged on Dec. 4, 1968. After Basic Training in San Diego, CA he received his assignment and became the ships barber. In June of 1966, he left for Norfolk VA and went through the Panama Canal, onto Hawaii, Philippines and then Vietnam, where they followed the downed planes as much as possible to see about rescue for the pilots. In his tour over 750,000 miles and 151 days at sea included Subic Bay, Japan, Hong Kong, and later was called to work with the NATO Squadron. They were joined by British, Dutch, Norwegian and German Squadrons. While over there they went into England, Norway, Ireland, and Scotland. Then after a short trip back to the states, they went up to Nova Scotia, Iceland, and back to Europe. He was always proud of serving in the military and enjoyed serving with the local VFW Color Guard for over 34 years.

On July 25, 1970 he married the love of his life Marcia (Herndon) Suchsland at St. John Lutheran Church of Kensington, KS. To this union was born Chalon Joelyn and Tracy Lee.

He was baptized on Oct. 28, 1955 at the Burr Oak Christian Church. He was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith at St. Johns of Kensington on Oct. 25, 1970. And remains a member at American Lutheran Church of Smith Center.

Up until his Diagnosis, he was proudly employed at ProAg of Kensington, KS as a Fuel truck driver, where he enjoyed visiting with all the farmers and people on his route.

He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1141, National Turkey Federation, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Assoc., and a Hunter Safety Instructor.

His hobbies included Hunting, and fishing with his Son and grandkids. Watching Royals baseball and Husker football. Wood working and projects around the house. His pride and Joy was his grandkids and watching them grow into their own. His most recent comfort was his daughter moving home from Florida and the family being together again.

Preceeding him in death were his parents Lester and Marjorie Suchsland, Parents-in-Law Wayne and Annetta (Eggers)Herndon, Sister Shirley (Suchsland) Kramer, and Grandparents Floyd and Evea Myers.

Survivors include his Wife Marcia of the home, daughter Chalon and fiance' Ron Watson of Smith Center, Son Tracy and wife Chris and grandchildren Hunter (Tuff) and Nevaeh of Kearney, NE; brothers Les and wife Judy of Kearney, NE; Carl and wife Terri of Superior, NE; sister Sharla and husband David of McPherson, KS; brother-in-law Larry Kramer and wife Diane of Junction City, KS; and his very special aunt Lylda Garman of Superior, NE as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the mortuary. Celebration of Life Services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, May 1, 2015 at the American Lutheran Church with Jim Germer P.M.A. officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Smith Center.
