Allen Smith, Age 75

Allen Smith, 75, was born September 5, 1939, in Iowa City, Iowa to Victor and Fern (Decker) Smith. He passed away Monday, July 27, 2015, at Hilltop Lodge, in Beloit, Kansas, after a valiant struggle with cancer.

As a child, his family moved to Hastings, Nebraska, then to Republican City, Nebraska, where he graduated with the class of 1957. It was here he met Elaine Ferguson, who became his bride on Easter Sunday, 1960. Allen served in the National Guard, 1956 to 1957, and in the U.S. Air Force for 1957 to October 29, 1962.

He worked for Bell Telephone Company, and then A.T. and T. for 33 ½ years, most of those years in Mankato, Kansas, retiring in 1998.

Allen was mechanically gifted and shared those gifts with his church, fixing whatever needed to be fixed, as well as helping neighbors with their farming. He served on the Board of Trustees of his church and was a faithful member of the church choir. Allen and Elaine sang in a mixed quartet that performed at the nursing homes, church, and community events. He also served on the Board of Education of U.S.D. 278. They loved to dance and to play golf. He served as President of the Golf Club for twelve years. Allen spent many hours helping maintain the golf course, club house, and cart sheds. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding motorcycles with his friends.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Fern Smith.
Survivors include his wife, of 55 years, Elaine of the home; sons - Jay of Ogden, Utah, Randy of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jeff of Holdrege, Nebraska; grandchildren - Joshua and Aubrey, Aaron, Samantha, Blaine, Caleb and Dawn Odle, and Cailyn; six great-grandchildren; siblings - Vonnie Jenson of Minden, Nebraska, Arvid Smith of Mansfield, Texas, Marvin Smith of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Jerry Smith of Denver, Colorado; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A celebration of life service will be (was) held Sunday, August 2, 2015, at 4:00 p.m., at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kansas, with Pastor Gerry Sharp officiating. Inurnment will be (was) Monday, August 3, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato, Kansas. The family will receive friends, Saturday, August 1, 2015, at the Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kansas, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friends may sign the book at the Mortuary from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2015 and Saturday, August 1, 2015. Online condolences maybe left at www.melbymortuary.com. The family suggests memorials to Solomon Valley Hospice, Beloit, or Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato.
