LaVera Ruth (Thoms) Poland passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Park Villa Nursing Home in Clyde, Kansas. LaVerawas born on May 9, 1925 in Chicago Heights, Illinois. Her parents, Verner and Bertha (Lohmeyer) Thoms lived on a farm in Indiana.

After the untimely death of her father from typhoid fever, LaVera moved with her mother, her sister and her brother back to Linn, Kansas, the original home of her mother. Her mother later married Fred Finke, and the family moved to Louisville, Kentucky. LaVera graduated from Louisville's Atherton High School in 1943. She married Harold Poland in Louisville on February 8, 1947 and then moved back to Kansas. To this union were born five children: Richard Poland - Anchorage, AK; Karen (Bruce) Wilgers - Wichita, KS; Bruce (Pam) Poland - Raymore, MO; Scott (Eddie) Poland - Los Angeles, CA; and Shari (Jeff) Duncan - Olathe, KS. In addition to being a loving homemaker, LaVera worked as a bookkeeper at the Louisville Title Insurance Company, the Home Economics Department in Manhattan, KS, and the Park Villa Nursing Home in Clyde, KS. She was a member of the Clyde Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship, theVFW Auxiliary and a former member of Research Club, PEO, and Fifties Bridge Club.

LaVera was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Viola Tedesco, and her brother Wallace Thoms. Survivors include her husband of over 68 years, her five children and their spouses, nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

LaVera loved cooking and baking for her family and the many relatives who came to visit them. She also loved to playgolf, and she spent many hours playing golf with her husband and their dear circle of friends.

A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the Clyde Christian Church with Rev. Fred Applegarth officiating. Burial will follow the services at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Clyde. Friends may sign the register book from 1-8 pm with the family greeting friends from 5-7 pm, Friday, August 14, 2015 at Chaput Mortuary, Clyde followed by coffee & refreshments at the Senior Citizen Center, Clyde.
