Carolyn Goodfriend, Age 91

Carolyn "Darlene" Goodfriend, 91, of Iowa City, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. She was the third child born to Herbert Delano Essig and Grace Emily Markley Essig on Dec. 31, 1924, on the family farm north of Bennington, Kan. Preceding her in death were her husband, Joe Goodfriend, and siblings, June Babcock, Margaret Breazeale and Herbert Issac Essig.

Darlene is survived by her daughters, Caryn Patton (Jack), of Montgomery, Texas, and Emily Schiefer (Bill), of Iowa City; grandsons, Jon and Luke Schiefer and Mike Patton (Tomoko); and four great-grandchildren, Ben, Alec and Cate Schiefer and Mitchel Patton.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Bennington Cemetery, Bennington. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Bennington Cemetery to perpetuate the Memorial Day recognition of all veterans and may be directed to Bennington Cemetery, P.O. Box 245, Bennington 67422.
