Arraignment of Darrell Hill’s Alleged MurderSuspect to Take pLace February 3

By Terry Bailey

On July 24, 2015, the body of Darrell Hill was discovered on the back porch of his home in Asherville. Hill was apparently the victim of an extremely brutal murder. Autopsy reports later indicted Hill’s death was caused by blunt force trauma to the head and body and by having his throat slashed from ear to ear.

Due to the absence of Sheriff Doug Daugherty, Undersheriff Tony Perez responded to the call. Arriving at the Hill residence at approximately 10:45 a.m. Perez was met by Larry Heidrick and Hill’s wife, June. On the back porch Perez observed the body of Darrell Hill who had clearly died a violent death.

After securing the crime scene, Perez called KBI Special Agent Steve Bundy from the Manhattan office. Bundy arrived at the scene at 2:00 p.m. Hill’s body was placed in a body bag and sent to Kansas City for an autopsy.

On July 27, Mitchell County Sheriff began conferring with Beloit Police Chief Dave Elam. Elam and Daugherty had both received phone calls earlier reporting a suspicious man dressed in dark clothing walking across a field on the evening of July 23. Later that day Elam received a tip about Hill’s murder from a confidential informant. Daugherty and Elam meet with the informant who identified the murderer as Trevin LeePaul Spencer. According to the informant, Spencer was talking about murdering a child molester. Additionally the law enforcement officers were told that Spencer almost always wore dark clothing.

On July 28th a car in which Spencer was a passenger was pulled over by Deputy Nick Werthman as it is was headed for Simpson where Spencer resides. Werthman placed Spencer under arrest and transported him to the Mitchell County Law Enforcement Center. Spencer’s shoes appeared to have dried blood on them and Undersheriff Perez took the shoes for DNA testing.

Special Agent Bundy and Sherriff Daugherty interviewed Spencer, who at first denied any knowledge of the murder of Hill. After the mention of DNA testing of his shoes and video camera footage from a camera on a Farmway COOP elevator, Spencer began his confession.

Spencer started his confession by reporting that at an early age he believed he had been told by God to kill child molesters. Hill had been convicted of child molestation a number of years ago in Cloud County. Spencer said he walked the five miles from his home in Simpson to the Hill residence in Asherville where he waited on the back porch. When Hill stepped outside, Spencer hit him twice on the head with a hammer he had brought with him. When Hill continued to struggle Spencer then stomped hard on Hill’s chest and head. At that time Spencer went into the Hill home, found a large kitchen knife and used it to deeply slit Hill’s throat. He then walked backed to Simpson.

The arraignemment will begin at 9:30 a.m. on February 3, 2016 at the Mitchell County Courthouse. The Honorable Judge Kim Cuidney will preside. Mitchell County Attorney Mark Noah will be the prosecuting attorney. Spencer will be defended by Attorney Julie Effenback of Belleville.
