April Board of Education Meeting

The U.S.D. #273 Board of Education conducted their monthly meeting for April, 2016 at the Board Office on North Independence Avenue, Monday night, April 11. All Board members were present.

First on the agenda was a report from Colson Rieman, Student Council President. Rieman said a scholarship was presented to Maeve Spangler. The $250 scholarship was awarded to her for her work with the Beloit High Red Cross Blood Drive.

The “Drive for Your School” promotion conducted by Beloit Auto and Truck Plaza resulted in an award of $2,500 to Beloit High.

This upcoming Friday will be a Faculty Appreciation breakfast provided by the Student Council. The STUCO will be selling luminaries for the Beloit Relay for Life during the first week in May.

A report from the Parent Teacher Organization was given. The current box top competition will conclude on May 6th. If anyone has spare box tops they would like to contribute, they would be welcomed. Additionally the Schwan’s fundraiser is still in operation. Teacher Appreciation Week is the first week of May. Fun Day Races will take place on Thursday, May 19th.

Superintendent Jeff Travis provided the Board with an update of events in his report. Travis said that the Legislature had passed a new school finance law and it was signed by the Governor. The Supreme Court will review the legislation and rule on its suitability for providing an equitable financing formula for ALL students in the State of Kansas by May 10th. It seems as if there are numerous proposal for funding of K-12 education in the State of Kansas. Some are reasonable and some seem to be farfetched.

At the last meeting, Karen Niemczyk reported that the Russell school district’s long standing Special Education director would be retiring and that they might entertain the possibility of joining with the Beloit Special Ed Coop. Since then, Russell has located a possible successor for their Special Ed program director. If this person takes the joh, they will remain independent. If that does not work out, they may want join the Coop.

Niemczyk also said that the First Boys Town Common Sense Parenting class will begin at the end of April. Each class will can register 12 participants. Anyone wishing to enroll in the class should call 738-5275 to express their interest.

Kyle Biesner, Beloit Jr. Sr. High Vice-Principal and Athletic Director, reported on the wide array of spring sports now going full speed. Track, baseball, softball, and golf are all experiencing very good success so far. April 29th will the 75th running of the Beloit Relays.

Beloit Jr. Sr. High Principal Casey Seyfert reported about the activities at his school. Two significant trips were taken by BHS students recently. One was a trip to Washington, D.C. and the other was a trip to Nashville, Tennessee. Some students went to Washington, came home and got on the bus later that day for Nashville. Everyone involved believed the trips were very productive and valuable.

State assessments are proceeding full speed ahead. The Large Group Music Festival is this Wednesday. There will be no school that day. Several students participated in the KSHSAA Regional Music Festival and a number of them qualified for State competition. The BHS orchestra has received a rating of ONE at the State level for the past 27 years.

Dental screenings were held at the school on April 1st. They were conducted by Dental Designs with assistance from the nursing students at the Technical College.

The National Honor Society inducted nine new members on March 21st. In the State FCCLA competition BHS students won three medals. The school practiced a Lock In activity to prepare students and staff for such an activity should one ever be necessary. Prom is this Saturday. The Jr. High Trip will include a visit to the Salt Mines near Hutchinson.

Brady Dean reported that the pre-school enrollment was complete for now. Currently there are 51 students enrolled for next fall. Dean expects the final number to be at or above 60 kids.

On March 15th, the PTO held their annual bingo night. It was considered to be a strong success.

State Assessments are also going strong at the Elementary School.

April 18th will be the 1st grade program. April 28th will be the 5th grade program. The Elementary School track meet will be held on May 11th. The BES Field day will take place on May 19th.

Rates at the Early Learning Center will be raised fifty cents per day for the next school year. One-half day students will see an increase from $13.00 per day to $15.00 per day.

Bids for carpets for some classrooms and the school office at the Elementary School were reviewed. By a 7-0 vote a bid from Wall to Wall Carpeting in the amount of $23,994 was accepted. Additionally, a bid for ceiling repair, ceiling fans, and steel entry doors for the multi-purpose room at the Elementary School was awarded to Senger Construction.

Contracts were approved for the following teachers for the 2016-17 school year: Shelby Adams, para educator-Alternative Learning Center, Barbara Hubert, Spanish Teacher, and Garry Lowry, Jr. High Physical Education Teacher.

Resignations were accepted from Teresa Griffeth Part-time Speech Pathologist-Special Ed Coop, and Karen Martin, Bus Driver and Teacher Aide-Special Ed Coop.

Janet Porter accepted a position as a Title One Instructor creating a vacancy for her sixth grade teaching position.

Two executive sessions lasting from 7:45 until 9:00 were conducted. No action was taken as a result of those meetings.
