Mitchell County Commissioners

Monday, May 2, 2016

By Terry Bailey

The Mitchell County Commissioners conducted their regular weekly business meeting on Monday, May 2. All Commissioners and the County Clerk were present to conduct the business of the County.

There were only a few items on the scheduled agenda but the Commissioner gave due deliberation to each and every item before them.

First on the agenda was Emergency Medical Service director Kelly Hawk. Hawk requested a 15 minute executive session to discuss non-elected personnel. Those participating in the closed session were the three Commissioners and Hawk. When the regular session re-adjourned it was announced that no action had been taken as a result of the closed session.

A Neighborhood Revitalization Grant application from Chris Conn was reviewed and approved. Conn is constructing a Post Frame Shed, 30’ x 40’ x 12’ in the amount of $17,536. Conn’s address is 1375 350 Road.

The minutes of the April 25th meeting were approved as written.

Commissioner Jim Marshall said that he had attended the Emergency Planning Committee meeting sponsored by Rick Horn, Emergency Management Director. Marshall said the guest speaker was Dan Bronson, director of the Newton, Ks Fire and EMS department. Bronson led the attendees at the meeting through a detailed discussion of the shooting incident at Hesston.

Kathy Webster, one of the two Mitchell County representatives on the Pawnee Mental Health Board of Directors, was present to discuss a mental health proclamation with the Commissioners.

After a brief discussion the Commissioners affirmed and signed a proclamation declaring the month of May as Mental Health Month in Mitchell County. The proclamation reads in part:

Whereas mental health conditions are real and prevalent in our nation; and

Whereas all Americans experience times of difficulty and stress; and

Whereas mental and physical health are interrelated; and

Whereas with early and effective treatment, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and led full, productive lives; and

Whereas each business, school, government agency, healthcare provider, citizen and organization shares the burden of mental health problems and has a responsibility to promote mental wellness and support prevention efforts.

Therefore Mitchell County does hereby proclaim May 2016 as Mental Health Month.

Courtney Murrow, Mitchell County Health Nurse, requested a 15 minutes executive session for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel. No action was taken as a result of the closed session.

A date was set for the Mitchell County Planning Commission. The Commission will conduct their first meeting on May 25th at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Nurses Quarters now the location of the Mitchell County Museum on West 8th Street.

Having successfully addressed all the items on the agenda, the meeting was adjourned.
