Oleta Spooner, Age 94

Oleta Lucille Wise Spooner was born February 16, 1922 to Lee and Evelyn McClure Wise on a farm in Jewell County north of Cawker City, Kansas. She departed this life of 94 years on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Downs, Kansas.

After several moves, Oleta grew up and graduated in three years from Burr Oak High School with the Class of 1939. She then took Normal Training, a one year course, to pursue a teaching career of six and one half years.

Oleta married Archie Fredrick "Bud" Spooner of Burr Oak, Kansas on March 9, 1944 while he was on leave between boot camp and his assignment on the USS Indiana in World War II. Born to this union were two children, Lynn Lee and Gail Louise. Some of the places they lived included Burr Oak, Ionia, KS, Carthage, MO, Yuma, AZ Cawker City, Jewell County, KS; and since 1966 they lived in Glen Elder, KS. Oleta last resided at the Golden Living Center in Downs, KS.

After her marriage, Oleta became a homemaker. Outside the home, she was a Sunday School teacher, involved in 4-H, various jobs and later worked at the Mitchell County Hospital for thirteen years.

Oleta enjoyed sewing and making crafts to show at craft fairs. She often helped other and encouraged them to pass the good deed along to others rather than pay her back or return the favor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2003, and their son Lynn, in 1968.

Oleta is survived by her daughter Gail Perkins and husband Steve of Abilene, TX; her sister Betty Parsons of Osage Beach, MO; grandchildren Joshua Perkins of Abilene, TX, Jonathan Perkins of El Paso, TX, Rachel Rodriguez of Abilene, TX, Jesse Perkins of Brownwood, TX; and two great-granddaughters and one great-grandson.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the Glen Elder Christian Church with Pastor Cody Fears officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family requests memorials be given to Christian Impact Ministries. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Monday at the McDonald Funeral Home.
