Herman Mertens, Age 90

Herman Eugene Mertens, the son of Henry and Theresa (Benken) Mertens, was born on December 8, 1925 in Kingman, Kansas. He passed away on June 8, 2016 at the Victorian Legacy at Superior, Nebraska at the age of 90 years, and 6 months.

Herman attended grade school in Kingman, Kansas. He farmed all his life in the Mt. Clare and Bostwick, Nebraska area. Herman was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on February 18, 1944 and was honorably discharged on May 25, 1946 as Corporal serving during the World War II. He was among the soldiers during the actions at Okinawa Ryukyu Islands on August 15, 1945.

He was a member of the Guide Rock American Legion serving as a former commander, he also was a board member of the Farm Bureau, and was a lifetime member of the VFW. Herman served on the ground breaking committee of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Superior.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Clara Murray, Odella Steveson, Theresa Ward, Mary Ann Martin, and Agnes Daniel, brothers Bernard, and James Mertens and infant brother, John.

He is survived by his brothers Joseph Mertens and wife Lila and Charles Mertens both of Superior, Nebraska and sisters Eleanor Hageman of Kingman, Kansas and Margaret Boone of Marion, Kansas; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
