September is Recovery Month

A really smart man once told me, “Life is very similar to the polka – two steps forward and one step back.” Since that time my observations have proved him to be correct.

Our professional lives are filled with advances as we learn and grow. Up the ladder we climb. Then…hard times strike. Our company is downsized, economic hardships lead the business to cut back and jobs are lost, and sometimes changes in technologies and modernization result in good paying jobs disappearing. We move forward and then we fall back. It is a part of life.

What a person does when the setbacks occur is the true measure of a person. It is possible to drown is a ditch in one inch of water if the person lies there, face down, and does not try recover, to get up and go on.

Pawnee Mental Health is celebrating the month of September as “Recovery Month.” They understand that when someone is injured, physically or psychologically, they need professional treatment, time to heal and to recover, and then an opportunity to get back in the game.

Local city and county governing bodies have been asked to sign proclamations naming September as Recovery Month in Beloit and in Mitchell County. The proclamation reads, in part:

Whereas it is critical to educate our policymakers, friends, and family members, health care providers and businesses that substance use and mental disorders are treatable and that people should seek assistance for these conditions with the same urgency as they would any other health conditions, and

Whereas, substance use and mental disorders are serious public health problems and in 2015, 2.5 million people aged 12 or older received substance abuse treatments at a specialty facility and 34.6 million adults aged 18 or older received mental health services according to the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The underlying concept is that folks experiencing psychological distress are well served by seeking professional assistance which will led to a more positive future. After getting help and getting better, they can get back into the game.
