Dean Anthony Hanson, 91, local farmer and businessman, passed away peacefully at the family farmhouse built by his grandfather, Louis Hanson, on the grounds of Cottage Grove Farm, in rural Jamestown, Kansas, on Wednesday, September 7, 2016.

Born on September 3, 1925 in Jamestown, Kansas, the son of Frank M. and Ida D. (Andersen) Hanson, he was the 3rd of five children. Dean grew up in rural Jamestown until approximately 1936 when the family moved to Concordia for his father's care until he passed in 1937 when Dean was 12 years old. On October 15, 1944, he married Dorothy Ann Schroth. They raised six children on the family farm northwest of Concordia.

Dean was a lifelong farmer. Through his partnership with wife Dorothy, mother Ida, brother Richard, and son Dane, he was eager to employ the latest trends in farming from grain storage systems, irrigation methods, to the latest in equipment technology. In addition, he was privileged to lead the movement of local farmers in the early 1950's to launch the local Coop (which at that time included a filling station and an appliance store) and construction of grain elevators (still a Concordia landmark). He was also a member and later, Exalted Ruler of the local Elks Lodge No. 586.
