Robert (Bob) Duane Hughes was born on June 20, 1929, to Gladys (Hoyt) and Grant Hughes, and departed this life on October 6, 2016, at the age of 87. Bob attended Athol, Fairview and Davenport rural school districts, and graduated from Smith Center High School with the class of 1949. Bob was drafted into the service on January 3, 1951, and served in Germany and Korea during the Korean War. He was discharged on December 29, 1952. Bob did heavy construction work and then worked in the Boogaarts warehouse in Smith Center for 28 years in various departments. He later worked part-time as a custodian at USD 237. Bob married Verla Mae Stanhope on September 25, 1954, and would enjoy becoming the father of two sons, Mike and Mitchell. Bob and Mae enjoyed going dancing with friends, and dining out with the family. Bob and Mae were married for 55 years before Mae lost her battle with cancer on July 13, 2009. Bob enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids. He was also a lifetime member of VFW Post #1141 in Smith Center, where he served a term as the local post commander.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mae, Brother Charles, and Sister Maxine.
