Classic Movies at the Port Library

The best kept secret in Beloit isn’t a secret. And…nobody is trying to keep it quiet. But spreading the word seems like a good thing to do.

On the third Thursday of each month, the staff of the Port Library present the Classic Movie Series showcasing Hollywood greats from days gone by. Classic movies means most are black and white. Classic movies means there are few explosions and almost nobody gets killed. Classic movies means viewers are treated to excellent acting presented by Hollywood stars such as Carey Grant and Gene Tierney.

These films do not rely on nudity, suggestive language, or gratuitous sex to entertain the audience. The Hollywood Classics entertains the viewers by presenting exceptional dancing by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Classic movies entertain by showcasing the talents of legendary leading actors such as John Wayne and Charles Laughton. Classic leading ladies such as Maureen O’Hara and Marlene Dietrich display acting skills not seen in today’s movies. World class vocals from Bing Crosby and Judy Garland take the viewer back to a simpler time.

The movies are shown in the Schaefer Room in the Port Library located on the North Campus at 1718 North Hersey in Beloit. The movies start promptly at 6:00 p.m. and end by 8:00 p.m. There is no charge to attend the movies at the Port Library however, the staff request that folks register by calling the Library at 738-3936. Free pop and popcorn are provided for all attending. The registration allows the staff to set up the correct numbers of chairs and to make sure they have adequate pop and popcorn for the movie attendees.

This year’s movie series began in August with The Mating Season from 1951. This was followed by The Strawberry Blonde, starring Olivia DeHaviland and tough guy James Cagney. That was followed by one of the all-time classics, Arsenic and Old Lace with one of Hollywood’s foremost leading men, Cary Grant. The last movie viewed was Holliday Inn which featured Bing Crosby’s crooning and the smooth dance moves of Fred Astaire.

The final movie to be screened for 2016 is Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol starring Reginald Owen. This 1938 film brings to life on the screen the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and his visits with the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future.

Once again, the movie will be shown in the Schaefer Room in the Port Library on the North Campus. The show starts at 6 p.m. There is no charge but please call 738-3936 to help the staff prepare for the showing of the movies.
