Dean Haddock, Age

Dean Donald Haddock departed life on February 20 2017 in Beloit, Kansas. Dean was born October 18 1923 in rural Ottawa County, to John and Faye (Hubbard) Haddock. He graduated from Bennington High School and the American Aeronautical Institute in Kansas City in 1941. In World War II, Dean trained as a Naval Aviation Cadet before transferring to the Army Air Corps, where he served as a B-24 gunnery sergeant and crew chief. Dean married Nancy Spurlock on June 1 1952 in Minneapolis, Kansas.

Dean was a leader in the growth and success of the Guaranty State Bank and Trust Company. He began employment at the Guaranty in 1952 as Agricultural Representative, one of the first such positions in Kansas. Dean served 16 years as President and Chief Executive Officer and retired in 2002, but returned to serve as an appraiser and farm consultant until 2010. While with the bank he instituted long-running Pasture Management and Commercial Cattle improvement programs.

Dean played instrumental roles in the establishment of the North Central Kansas Vocational Technical School, Solomon Valley Feedlot and construction of Beloit Jr./Sr. High School. As an officer on the Solomon Valley Flood Control and Conservation Association, he made many trips to Washington DC to lobby for funding to construct Glen Elder Dam and Lake Waconda.

Dean served in numerous positions of leadership, including president of the Beloit Industrial Development Board, the Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce, the USD 273 Board of Education, and the Beloit Rotary Club, chairman of the North Central Kansas Vocational Technical School Board of Control, and 42 years on the Mitchell County Fair Board. Dean was an elder in the Beloit Presbyterian Church for many years. He served on the Kansas Advisory Committee for Vocational Education and the Kansas Master Planning Commission for Higher Education. Dean was the recipient of the 1990 Governor and First Lady Volunteer Award for outstanding community volunteer work.

Dean was a life-long supporter of Kansas State University. He graduated from K-State in 1950 with a B.S.in Agronomy and played football while there. Dean served on the K-State Alumni Association Board of Directors and the KSU Alumni Athletic Board.

Dean is survived by Nancy, his wife of 64 years, son Mike and wife Toni of Manhattan, granddaughters Molly of Manhattan and Kate of Evanston, Illinois; sisters Doris Logan of Minneapolis and Ruth Cramer of Glasco, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Dorothy Channer, and brother Evan.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Beloit. Memorials may be made to the Beloit Presbyterian Church or the Johnson Cancer Research Center at Kansas State University.
