The Beloit Trojan Cross-country team traveled to Leonardville Golf Course for their Regional meet hosted by Riley County. The top ten runners in both the girls and boys races earned the opportunity to compete at the state meet along with the top three teams. A total of fifteen schools were represented in the meet. In the boys race which had 87 runners, Alex Conn ran away from the field in the last half mile winning the race with a time of 16:56. Trent Allen was the next Trojan across the finish in 27th place with a time of 19:40. Freshman, Anthony Nunez, was 39th in 20:17 followed by Junior Isaac Hesting in 50th place and Senior Christian Daniels in 53rd. Freshman Dustin Williams finished the course in 23:17 earning him 78th. The boys finished 7th overall. Host Riley Country won the meet followed by Sabetha and Silver Lake. "Overall I was pleased with the performances, Alex had a great performance today and both Nunez and Daniels finished their seasons with personal bests," stated Coach Mason. "With most of the guys coming back, I'm already looking forward to a competitive 2013 season." In the girls race, a total of 72 runners competed for a chance to run at the State meet. Freshman Michaela Pingel was the first Trojan girl to the finish in 19:03, which gave her a 41st place finish. Madison Wolfe was 48th in 19:25. Erin Kelley and Savanna Cox finished 56th and 58th respectively in 20:07 and 20:10. With only four running, no team score was tallied for the lady Trojans. "Several of the girls ran close to their season bests with Madison achieving a personal record for herself", noted Mason. "This is a young team with great potential the next few years. As with the boys I'm eagerly looking forward to next season," further noted Coach Mason. One member of the team still has an additional week of practice with the coach, that being Alex Conn. After a 5th place overall finish last year, Alex looks to improve upon his performance in what will be a very competitive race at the University of Kansas-Rim Rock course on Saturday. The boys race will begin at 12:00 with over one-hundred of the best harriers in 3A competing for a chance to stand on the awards stand. "After a slow start with an injury at the beginning of the season, I'm elated with where Alex finds himself right now, it will be a tremendously exciting race to watch," further noted Mason.
