Ida Elizabeth Smith, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Steinhauser) Schmuecker, was born on December 20, 1924 on a farm south of Stuart, Nebraska. She passed away on January 20, 2013 at Superior Good Samaritan Society at the age of 88 years and 1 month.
She attended rural school until the 6th grade. Her parents moved to Atkinson, Nebraska and she finished her schooling at St. Joseph's High School at Atkinson. After taking her normal training she taught school for 43 years retiring in 1986. Her teaching career consisted of 14 years in rural Holt County, 3 years at Hampton, Nebraska and 26 years at Edgar, Nebraska. She went to college at Wayne State, then the University of Nebraska and graduated with a B.S. degree from Dana College at Blair, Nebraska in 1967. She retired in May of 1986.
On August 14, 1965 she married Ernest Smith at York, Nebraska. During their married life they lived in Superior where he worked for Ace Gas, Inc.
She was past president of the Superior Area Retired Teachers, a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the St. Joseph's Altar Society, a member of the Leisure Lovin' Sams Camping Club and the Spring Creek Swingers Square Dancers. She volunteered at the Vestey Center Noon meals, the Nifty Thrifty, the gift shop at Brodstone Memorial Hospital, card recycling and Senior Sit Ups exercise group.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernest, her brother Joseph and an infant sister.
She is survived by her sister Evelyn Slaughter of York, Nebraska and a brother Edward Schmuecker and wife Gloria of Atkinson, Nebraska. Two step-sons, Warren Smith and wife Jeannie of Superior, Nebraska and Linden Smith of Grand Island, Nebraska, step grandsons Chad and Leslie and step granddaughters Carley and Hayley; nieces, nephew, Rod Schmuecker and wife Patty of Atkinson, Kansas, Sheryl Fix and husband Rod of Yankton, South Dakota, Patti Schaaf of Ord, Nebraska, and Michele Stoltenberg and husband Todd of Seargent, Nebraska; cousins and a host of friends.
