Steven Lynn Conaway

Steven Lynn Conaway, 60, of Pittsburg, KS, passed away at 12:59 a.m., Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Via Christi Hospital, Pittsburg.
He was born July 14, 1952, at Smith Center, KS, the son of Lawrence and Norma (Smith) Conaway.
After receiving his Board Certification in Behavioral Analysis, Mr. Conaway was hired with the SEK Special Education Cooperative, now known as the SEK Interlocal #637 in August of 1999. He worked as a school psychologist and behavior specialist for the 13 districts within the Interlocal. During his tenure with the Interlocal he continued to increase his knowledge and expertise as a behavior specialist. Mr. Conaway was a great asset to the organization and related well to the students he served. He laid the ground work for the Interlocal in the field of behavior specialist and provided a foundation that continues today in serving special needs children. In addition to being a wonderful professional, he was a caring individual and took great pride in building relationships with all staff with whom he worked. He was well respected by peers and added a scintillating presence to the organization. He retired in July of 2011.
Membership was held in the United Church of Christ at Athol, KS.
Mr. Conaway was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at the Countryside Golf Course.
He is survived by two daughters, Channan Wilderman and Chandra Smalley both of Frontenac, KS, his mother, Norma Conaway of Athol, KS, three sisters, Lori Collier and her husband, Jeff of Ft. Scott, KS, Debra Ward and her husband, Trey of Smith Center, KS, and Mardi Lohoefener and her husband, Seth of Oberlin, KS, and seven grandchildren, Christian Boor, Emily Smalley, Mercedes Smalley, Gwendolyn Smalley, Jayden Wilderman, Cash Wilderman and Chance Wilderman.
He is preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Conaway.
Visitation will be held from 10AM until service-time at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30AM at the Simmons-Rentschler Mortuary in Smith Center with Pastor Tom James officiating.
Burial will be on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at Myers-Pleasant View Cemetery, north of Athol, KS.
