"Good to Great" by Jim Collins

For the past several years, many of my colleagues have mentioned to read the book by Jim Collins "Good to Great". I wondered why it was such an important publication and after reading it, I now understand why. All of us want our companies to be "great". We may be "good" but are we "great". Five years in the making, Jim Collins finalized his book and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice.

One of the findings:

Great leaders understood three simple truths.

1. Begin with "who," rather than "what," you can adapt to a changing world. If people join the bus primarily because of where it is going, what happens if when you get 10 miles down the road and you need to change direction? You've got a problem. But if people are on the bus because of who else is on the bus, then it's much easier to change direction.
2. Have the right people on the bus, the problem of how to motivate and manage people largely goes away. The right people don't need to be tightly managed or fired up; they will be self motivated by the inner drive to produce the best results and to be part of creating something great.
3. If you have the wrong people, it doesn't matter whether you discover the right direction; you still won't have a great company. Great vision without great people is irrelevant.

The point is to FIRST get the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus) BEFORE you figure out where to drive it.

Are you prepared for a disaster? Do you know that more than 1 in 4 businesses will experience a disaster over the course of a year? It is estimated 25% of those without a Disaster Recovery (DR) plan never reopen.

You are invited to attend:
Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery Lunch & Learn
Hosted by Computer Solutions, Inc.
July 25, 2013, 11:30am-1pm, Plum Creek Restaurant

When thinking about your DR plan, ask yourself the following questions:
• Do I have a technology plan?
• Have I tested the DR plan?
• Should I assess the readiness of my systems/plan?
It's not just tornadoes. With the ever-present risk of technology troubles like electrical outages, server failures or fire, it's easy to see that disaster recovery and business continuity must be a central part of your organization's planning.

Join CSI for a free seminar that includes lunch on July 25th at 11:30am at the Plum Creek Restaurant to learn more about:

Disaster Recovery Planning, Implementation and Testing. Discussion will center on the latest innovations in cost-effective Cloud Based DR Solutions that can have your business up-and-running in minutes rather than hours in the event of a server failure or complete disaster.

We will have an open discussion where we can help answer your questions and identify vulnerabilities or opportunities for keeping your business safe and sound!

We look forward to seeing you on July 25th. Please RSVP to 785-738-3089 by July 24th.

Adopt a Classroom

The Beloit Business Committee (BBC) would like to begin a program in August that allows Beloit area businesses to "adopt" an elementary classroom at BES or St. Johns. The BBC will work with the area businesses to match a business with a classroom. The teachers are making their "needs list" of 10-12 items that can purchased locally and will be turning them in August 1st. With budget cuts, the hope is to help each teacher and classroom fill a void. Now we need your help to "adopt" an elementary classroom to fill the lists. For more information you can contact the Chamber at 738-2717 or Janet Remus, Super 8, at 738-8592.

Noteworthy News

The Chamber wants to help spread the word about your business. "Noteworthy News" is your opportunity to do just that. It's a great way to inform other Chamber members about anything that's new within your organization. Fill us in on what's happening from staff changes to a new product or service. Send it to beloitchamber@nckcn.com by Thursday afternoons and I will include it in Chamber Chat!
