"Good to Great" by Jim Collins
For the past several years, many of my colleagues have mentioned to read the book by Jim Collins "Good to Great". I wondered why it was such an important publication and after reading it, I now understand why. All of us want our companies to be "great". We may be "good" but are we "great". Five years in the making, Jim Collins finalized his book and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice.
One of the findings:
Great leaders understood three simple truths.
1. Begin with "who," rather than "what," you can adapt to a changing world. If people join the bus primarily because of where it is going, what happens if when you get 10 miles down the road and you need to change direction? You've got a problem. But if people are on the bus because of who else is on the bus, then it's much easier to change direction.
2. Have the right people on the bus, the problem of how to motivate and manage people largely goes away. The right people don't need to be tightly managed or fired up; they will be self motivated by the inner drive to produce the best results and to be part of creating something great.
3. If you have the wrong people, it doesn't matter whether you discover the right direction; you still won't have a great company. Great vision without great people is irrelevant.
The point is to FIRST get the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus) BEFORE you figure out where to drive it.

Alzheimer's Association of Central and Western Kansas
When someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, friends and family have many questions. What does the diagnosis mean? What kinds of plans need to be made? What resources are available to help? As the disease progresses, new questions reflect growing needs for skills, programs and services. Join us for this series of programs that provide answers to the questions that arise in the early, middle and late stages of the disease. Hear from those directly affected and learn what you need to know, what you need to plan, and what you can do at each point along the way.
This program is FREE for caregivers of people with Alzheimer's or a related dementia. Topics covered will include:
• Developing a care team • Care and treatment options
• Legal and financial planning • Communicating and connecting
• Coping strategies • Maximizing independence
All Classes: Early stage 10am to 12pm

Adopt a Classroom
The Beloit Business Committee (BBC) would like to begin a program in August that allows Beloit area businesses to "adopt" an elementary classroom at BES or St. Johns. The BBC will work with the area businesses to match a business with a classroom. The teachers are making their "needs list" of 10-12 items that can purchased locally and will be turning them in August 1st. With budget cuts, the hope is to help each teacher and classroom fill a void. Now we need your help to "adopt" an elementary classroom to fill the lists.
