Mary E. Roop

Mary Elizabeth Roop, the daughter of Henry George Herzfeld and Bertha (Zurfluh) Herzfeld, was born June 7, 1927 at Norcatur, KS and passed away on January 18, 2014 at the Parkview Haven Nursing Home, Deshler, NE at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and 11 days.

Mary moved at the age of 8 years old to live with her Aunt Elizabeth Cross in Haddam, KS where she grew up and attended the local public schools. Following her schooling, she lived in Belleville, KS where she did domestic work for a family in Belleville.

In 1944, she was united in marriage to Kermit W. Roop and to this union was born: Everett, Kermit Jr., Bob and Linda. They lived in Belleville for a year and then moved one and one-half miles north of Chester where they lived until 1950 when they moved to a place one mile north of Chester and then in 1960 moved in town to Chester.

Mary worked for Footes Café for many years and also in earlier times for Gallion Grocery both at Chester. She also worked in Beatrice, NE at the bakery for a time and then was a cook for the Chester/Hubbell/ Byron school for 21 years until her retirement.

Mary was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, Chester, NE where she was the Church Secretary for many years. She also was involved with the U.M.W., the Eagles, an Auxiliary member of the V.F.W. and an officer in the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter # 31, Hebron, NE.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, George and Bertha (Zurfluh) Herzfeld, husband Kermit W. Roop in 1998, son: Kermit Roop Jr., brothers and sisters: George, Fred, John, Ernest, Walt, Alvin, Dorothy & Doris, Martha, Lillian, and Herman.

She is survived by two sons: Everett (Cathy) Roop of Chester, NE and Bob (Linda) Roop of Belvidere, NE; one daughter: Linda (Kirby) Woebbecke of York, NE; step-son Richard Propp of Phoenix, AZ; step-daughter: Willa Hunter of Prescott Valley, AZ; two sisters: Pauline Frye of Belleville, KS and Molly Longacre of Mesa, AZ; one brother: Frank Herzfeld of Seward, NE; 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Chester, NE with Pastor Mark Baldwin, officiating.

Interment will be at the Chester Cemetery, Chester, NE.

Visitation will be from 9 AM until 9 PM on Tuesday with the family greeting friends from 5 PM until 7 PM on Tuesday at the Bachelor-Surber Funeral Home, Chester, NE.

Memorials are suggested to the Chester United Methodist Church or the Chester Senior Center.
