Virginia Lee Severance, born on August 28, 1929, in Beloit, Kansas, was the second eldest among six siblings to Leroy and Eva Moss. She peacefully passed away on March 18, 2024 at the age of 94 while residing with her daughter in Hoxie, Kansas.
Growing up on a farm in Mitchell County, Virginia faced early responsibilities after her mother's passing just before her 14th birthday. Alongside her older sister, she assumed the caretaking role for their home and the upbringing of their three younger brothers and sister, as her mother had diligently prepared them for.
During her senior year in high school, she fell in love with a tall, handsome sailor returning home from WW II, named Bill. Their union lasted over seventy years, during which they raised three beautiful daughters. Following Bill's passing in 2019, Virginia relocated to Hoxie to be with her daughter.
Throughout her life, Virginia found joy in various activities, including family vacations orchestrated by her father, where they embarked on cross-country drives and camping trips in a Volkswagen van. In her 50s, she took up playing the piano, and she also enjoyed cooking, knitting, tending to her numerous dogs, and reading from her collection of Bibles. Towards the end of her life, she cherished connecting with family over Facetime, often bidding farewell with her own mother's endearing phrase, "sweet dreams and kisses." In their final years, Virginia and Bill were lovingly cared for by their three devoted daughters, a true blessing for which they were immensely grateful.
Virginia is survived by her three daughters, Anita (Jim) Oelke of Hoxie, Kansas, Melanie (Larry) Miltner of Medicine Lodge, Kansas, and Susan (Dale) Engelbert of Norton, Kansas; one brother, Dan Moss; one sister, Evalyn Adams; sisters-in-law, Beverly Moss and Mary Severance; brothers-in-law, Bob (Mary Ann) Severance, Harold (Ann) Severance and many nieces and nephews.
Among her family are eight grandchildren, Eva (Brian) Gavin, Alicia (Mike) Sanders, Jessica (Joe) Ohler, Justin (Rylee) Miltner, Brent Engelbert, Zane (Amy) Engelbert, Elise (Trevis) Rottler, and Bryce (Emily) Engelbert. Also among her family are 24 great-grandchildren, Kenny, Isaiah, Will and Beren Gavin, Victoria McFarland, Allison (Gunner) DeClue, and Chris Sanders, Emma and Elizabeth Ohler, Davis, Darcie, Aubrey, and Hudson Miltner, Dalton, Emily and Madelyn Engelbert, Turner, Ava, Dylan and Ella Engelbert, Emmery and Kai Rottler, and Cadyn and Avery Engelbert. And finally, among her family are great-great-grandchildren, Reese and Rhett McFarland.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents, LeRoy and Eva Moss; brothers, David and Joe Moss; sister, Joan Elder; brother-in-law, Wilford Severance, and sister-in-law, Berta Moss.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to her neighbors, beloved family members, and dear friends for their unwavering support and prayers throughout this journey.
Funeral services will be at 10 AM Tuesday, March 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Beloit. The casket will remain closed and there will be no visitation.
Memorials may be given to the Church or the Mitchell County Historical Society.
